Showcasing CRC Early Career Scientists

As part of an assignment for my Science Communication Strategies unit, I had the opportunity to participate in the Cooperative Research Centres Association (CRCA ) annual conference.

Science in Action Expo

"Through interactive exhibits and real experiments, the general public
has a unique opportunity to see science at work and talk to scientists
from a range of organisations and disciplines. There will also be
people on hand to give advice for those considering a career in science.

As part of the 2007 Cooperative Research Centre Association (CRCA) Conference, the Science in Action Expo brings Australian science and technology to the public."

peer learning groups

Tuesday was the first session of Conversation Circle and today, Thursday was the first session of UniSpeakers Club.

Like all speaking events I was nervous about attending these sessions, but as I keep telling myself, that is why I'm going. To have more practise so that I can become more relaxed in informal conversations and giving formal presentations.

uni week 07^H^H study break

I thought it was just going to be a short week because of Easter Monday. I was working on an assignment anyway, so it didn't matter what day it was.

Fortunately, in response to my email saying that I would be dropping off my assignment before the lecture, the unit coordinator contacted me to say 'you do know that ...'. No, I didn't know that it was study break, i.e. a non-teaching week.

It felt like a time-warp as I now had time that I didn't know I had, but knew it would get consumed with catching up with the down-time from last week.

third of the way

End of university week 4, and I'm already a third of the way through first semester. Yikes, that slipped by.

I still feel as if I have just started the year, but then again I have the first part of an assignment due next Friday, and we got the handout for the next assignment today, which is due in four weeks time. So starting to feel the load a bit.

get to the T.A.P.

If you need a drink to have a good time, then you want to get to the T.A.P.

In the second week of uni, my car was trapped by umpteen buses lined up
in the car park outside the Guild and Oak Lawn.

I had the 'opportunity' to see the rather ugly side of some a lot of
you. My friends and colleagues said that you were just school kids last year. Well,
I'm afraid that excuse just does not cut it. Most of us were at school before our first year at uni.

UWA Bike Breakfast

Just got back from the 2007 UWA Bike Breakfast held on Riley Oval (oval next to the University Club of Western Australia).

We got there just on 7am, a quick ride (mostly in the dark due to
Daylight Saving) from South Perth. This is my usual trek to uni, but I
have not done it this early in the morning before.

What was special about this ride, is that there was little or no
wind. Often I have a SW or SSW wind, i.e. head wind, so the weather man
was kind to me this morning.

Australian Synchrotron and Linux

I was so excited to get an email with excerpts from AARNews Issue 7, March 2007 (PDF - 785Kb).

The two articles talk about the collaboration between research
scientists and the Australian Instrumentation and Computing Team to
commission the Australian Synchrotron.
