What are all these accounts I've got now?

Hi everyone!

I'm a UWA employee. I currently work in IT for the Faculty of Arts, Humanties and Social Sciences, and in the past, I've worked in IT Services and the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, and done bits and pieces for other parts of the University on and off since 2001.

For first years or others who are just beginning to need to use IT resources at UWA, you're probably finding things a little bit confusing. It's not just you. UWA's had computers since the 1962. Over the years, things have got a little sprawling and confusing. We're working on fixing it, but for now, you just need to be aware that there's more than one account for you at UWA.

Cheap copies of Microsoft Office 2007

Microsoft Australia are offering copies of the latest version of their ubiquitous office suite, Microsoft Office 2007, for quite low prices - $25 for a one-year license, and $75 for a perpetual license. It's the Ultimate Edition, too, not the cut-down Student Edition.

Head to itsnotcheating.com.au and sign up with your credit card and University e-mail account. You can download the software from an AARnet mirror, which means you shouldn't be charged for the large amount of traffic it will use.

Australian Synchrotron and Linux

I was so excited to get an email with excerpts from AARNews Issue 7, March 2007 (PDF - 785Kb).

The two articles talk about the collaboration between research
scientists and the Australian Instrumentation and Computing Team to
commission the Australian Synchrotron.
