Hi Everyone
Here are the details from last weeks session on planning your speech. Remember timing is extremely important!
Speech Preparation
Again well done to everyone who came this week. It is always good to see new faces. Everyone is welcome to join in, no previous experience required!
In this session we focused on using your body language. Eye contact is an ongoing theme and something to always keep in mind
Remember
Eye contact (refresh sweep, z or stay)
Posture (refresh alignment from last week)
Some don’ts
• Hands on hips – you look too condescending or parental
• Crossed arms – you are not conveying a look that says, "Let’s talk."
Hi Everyone
For those of you at the Grammar Clinic Tuesday 25th October the second box down in the articles flow chart was giving us a bit of trouble. I have found another definition. “A noun that has specific reference is one that both the writer and the reader recognise as something unique. We know exactly which on or ones are being referred to. Sometimes we know that the noun being referred to is unique because of our knowledge of the world or the topic.”
The earth revolves around the sun.
‘Sun’ is unique because we are referring to the only sun in our solar system.
Here are some more aticulation exercises for you to practice
1. Around and round the rough and rugged rocks the ragged rascal ran.
2. He sawed six sleek, slim, slender saplings in twain.
3. The seething sea ceaseth, and thus the seething sea sufficeth us.
4. Sheep shouldn't sleep in a shack; sheep should sleep in a shed.
5. Hang the table cloth close to the clothes and close the clothes basket.
6. A box of mixed biscuits and a biscuit mixer.
7. Did you copper bottom 'em, sir? No, I aluminumed 'em, mum.
Well done to everyone who came this week. It was good to see a few new faces again this week. Everyone is welcome to join in, no previous experience required!
In this session we really focused on using your voice. Eye contact will be a recurring theme and will also be noted next week
Remember
Eye Contact
Sweep or stay
Don’t go overboard
Z formation
Voice
Balanced alignment or stance
Deep breathing
Projection
Articulation
Vary your tone and inflection
Pause if you need to
Talk to the audience
Thanks to those who came and made a great start on our semester two UniSpeakers Club. It was great to have a mixture of the ‘beginners’ and the ‘seasoned professionals’.
This session was just a warm up where we discussed some basic speaking principles and dealing with nerves.
Don’t forget to:
Accept your nervousness
Realise other people can’t see what you feel
Breathe out
Take a moment if you need one
Know you material
Focus on the content of your talk and not the bigger fears
Engage in active problem solving
Make an audience member your friend

Hi all - the forum is here to follow-up the face-to-face sessions. Type a message to chat to Jo or any of the other particpants!

We've had quite a few comments on our forum topic of procrastinating -it seems to strike a common chord with many. Check them out at through the link on the right hand side menu. Even the West Australian this morning was reporting a study of Curtin students about procrastination. About how cutting the time short to achieve a task can get the adrenaline pumping and be positive, but if you don't leave yourself enough time - then it's counter-productive, as you just get really stressed. It's working out that balance between enough time and running short that's tricky...
Our lecturers tell us they love it when we are critical of the readings they set, the lectures they give, the ideas they raise. Hmmn. This can seem a little strange at first. Some of us want to ask: Are we being lured by the critical analysis carrot, which leads only to the dungeon of bad grades?

Well here we are at the end of week 4 with only 2 weeks until the official end of winter and only 3 weeks until the mid-Semester study break.
If your resolutions from Semester 1 have fallen by the wayside or if you need a weekly boost to your studying you might want to sign-up for the Get Smart e-newsletter (at: http://www.studentservices.uwa.edu.au/ss/learning/portal). The newsletter includes study tips, reminders about workshops and (this week) some opportunities to earn some extra $$ with our team.
