The node.live community has moved!

You can now find the online community for incoming and enrolled UWA students on the UWA Students Facebook Fan Page

The functionality of Facebook fan pages has recently been upgraded and we can now broaden our community to more students and staff. We see the move to Facebook as a natural evolution for the NODE project – from an in-house system to a globally-used network.

The NODE project will continue to run the annual survey of UWA First Year students’ access to, experience with and expectations of ICT. If you have read our book chapter* or any other publication that refers to the node.live community you can now check out our Facebook Fan page or contact the chapter authors.

UWA Staff can direct students to the Facebook group (email for the HTML to create a direct link Facebook badge) and can get more information, disclaimer text and full Terms and Conditions from the Student Services website.

Hello, my myriad of fans!

National award for UniSkills

Great news for UniSkills that it has been successful in winning the Australian Teaching and Learning Council award for Support of Student Learning in the category of First Year. We prepared a submission back in July and were really not expecting to be successful because the competition is pretty strong. But the Uniskills program is 21 years old this year and we thought that was a strong 'hook' on which to hang an argument about the value of a program that has had over 4,000 students be part of it over the years.

Is it just me..?

Does anyone else get these Get Smart newsletters?  I must admit I didn't read the first few that came but now I'm sort of glad they arrive magically in my in-box!  Sort of like a pre-weekend study coach keeping me on the straight and narrow.  I think I signed up for them at a drop-in in the Library.  either way - they're pretty handy!

Is email taking over our lives?

I wonder if anyone has created a new psychological term for obsession with email because I'm sure some people suffer from this condition. Email is great but it's also really intrusive sometimes. You start checking it on the weekends, when you're on leave, just in case you've missed something. And then, before you know it, you're hooked into replying, thinking about study or work or whatever and there's no escape.

And here we go again...

Hello everyone-who-is-reading-this Cool

So, another study week is just about to kick off. We only get four these a year - two of them heralding exams. This isn't one of those - obviously, being it's mid-semester - so that's ok.

Struggling

And a resounding hello to all my new converts!

As the title of this post suggests, this entry deals with 'struggling'. Right now I am struggling - with school work, due to something that is rather out of my control. I am usually a very confident person; I am secure in my abilities to deal with whatever travails life throws at me. But lately that has been called into question - my self-esteem, usually well-cared for and flourishing, has taken a hit.
